Lefamulin or moxifloxacin for community-acquired pneumonia: balancing innovation, safety, and evidence
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The recent approval of lefamulin presents an alternative to fluoroquinolones for community-acquired pneumonia. In recent trials, lefamulin matched moxifloxacin in early clinical response and safety, with a favorable activity spectrum including atypical pathogens. However, fluoroquinolones remain entrenched due to cost, clinician familiarity, and broad guidelines. This letter examines current evidence comparing the two, highlights potential niches for lefamulin, and calls for more trials to guide adoption in diverse healthcare settings.
