Year: 2025
Type: dissertation
Abstract: Background:The United Methodist Youth Fellowship (UMYF) serves as a vital ministerial arm of the United Methodist Church, with leadership development as one of its core ministries. Activities such as Bible Study training, institutes, conferences, and meetings highlight the importance of nurturing young leaders. Justification:Despite these efforts, leadership insufficiencies were observed within the NEPD UMYF. To address this gap, the study assessed leadership needs and designed a mentoring training module to strengthen holistic leadership growth. Major Finding:The assessment revealed that spiritual development is the foremost leadership need among UMYF members, underscoring the centrality of faith practices in effective leadership. Key Results:From 160 respondents (154 youth, 6 former officers), five priority areas emerged. Spiritual Development ranked highest (mean 3.17), emphasizing prayer life, devotion, and ministry involvement. Personality Development followed (mean 3.16), focusing on attitude and social behavior. Communication Skills (mean 3.07) and Leadership Abilities (mean 3.04) highlighted the need for stronger listening, planning, and collaboration. Other Skills (mean 3.01), including time management and conflict resolution, were also identified. Conclusion/Significance:The study produced a leadership mentoring training module tailored to these needs. This resource is expected to enhance leadership capacity, improve transitions, and equip UMYF leaders to serve with greater competence and spiritual maturity.
