Benefits and Barriers to Right of Way Rain Gardens
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The results and product created in this project offer several potential applications for the Town of Auburn and other urban areas facing issues with stormwater runoff: Encouraging Infrastructural Change: By developing a guide for the creation of rain gardens, this project encourages urban centers to invest in rain gardens that will decrease the amount of pollution runoff from stormwater. Providing Ideas for Future Initiatives: This project provides a good example for developing low-cost solutions to important problems. Informing the Community: The guide that this project created informs the community about the dangers of stormwater runoff, as well as a provides a way to prevent it. This project, conducted by undergraduate students at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in collaboration with the Town of Auburn, Massachusetts, and the Central Massachusetts Regional Stormwater Coalition, provides a test case and development plan for building rain gardens to reduce the amount of stormwater runoff.
