Precision UV Laser Scribing for Amorphous Silicon Solar Cells: Layer-Specific Analysis and Optimization

Year: 2025
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: The demand for efficient and scalable photovoltaic manufacturing necessitates advanced techniques for material processing. This study investigates the use of UV lasers for the scribing process on intrinsic and n-type amorphous silicon layers, focusing on optimizing parameters such as pulse energy (26–30 µJ), repetition rate (1–10 kHz), and environmental conditions. A commercial p-type silicon wafer with intrinsic and n-type layers of 27 nm and 82 nm thickness, respectively, was scribed under precise conditions to minimize thermal effects and material redeposition. The intrinsic layer showed line widths ranging from 16.29 µm to 17.30 µm in SEM analysis, while AFM data revealed widths of 20.27 µm to 24.37 µm, indicating smooth surface morphologies. For the n-type layer, depth values ranged from 13.87 nm to 266.56 nm, with consistent nano-crystalline features observed. Despite challenges such as edge irregularities and surface roughness, the process proved robust, achieving uniform scribing with minimal defects. These findings highlight the adaptability of the laser system for applications in optical and electronic devices and provide valuable insights into improving device efficiency, scalability, and cost-effectiveness. Future work will aim to optimize the scribing process by refining laser parameters to achieve greater precision, uniformity, and scalability in photovoltaic applications.
