A Dual-Motion Wave Energy Converter Utilizing Vertical and Horizontal Buoy Movements
Year: 2025
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: The energy contained in ocean waves represents a significant resource for meeting the growing demand for electricity. Wave energy distinguishes itself from other renewable energy sources through its economic, environmental, and technological benefits. The primary aim of this study is to generate electricity by harnessing wave motion. For this purpose, a wave energy converter (WEC) is employed to transform surface wave movements into electrical energy. The amount of power generated varies according to wave intensity. While conventional approaches utilize only the vertical oscillations of the buoy, in this work both the vertical and horizontal movements are converted into energy. The proposed setup consists of a frame, buoy, rack-and-pinion mechanism, and a DC generator. The buoy is attached to the rack-and-pinion system and connected to the generator shaft via gears. The gear train is designed to increase the rotational speed delivered to the generator. The electricity produced is stored in a battery. The distinctive feature of this work is the conversion of the buoy’s motions in both directions into electrical energy. Wave energy projects require a skilled workforce throughout all stages, from research and development to production, installation, and maintenance. In addition, coastal communities can benefit from the development of wave energy projects through increased employment and economic opportunities. By providing a stable and sustainable source of income, wave energy can have a positive impact on coastal communities. These communities can take advantage of their proximity to the ocean to harness wave power and generate electricity, thereby creating a localized energy system that reduces dependence on external resources. This drive for innovation in the wave energy sector can also extend to other industries, leading to technological advancements and economic growth. Governments, venture capitalists, and renewable energy companies can contribute to the financial sustainability of wave energy enterprises through early-stage investments and strategic partnerships.
