Gravity from a Fundamental Oscillator of Time: A Unimodular Reformulation without Extra Degrees of Freedom

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This paper proposes a conceptual reformulation of gravity and quantum mechanics based on the hypothesis that time is a fundamental physical process governed by a local scalar oscillator $\omega(x)$, rather than a passive geometric dimension. Within a unimodular gravitational framework, we define proper time via the oscillator frequency and demonstrate that the constraint $\sqrt{-g}=1$ naturally induces spatial curvature, recovering the Schwarzschild metric and PPN parameter $\gamma=1$ in the kinematic limit. While we acknowledge the formal challenges in constructing a standard Lagrangian for such a scalar-tensor sector, we argue that the heuristic value of this model is substantial. The ``Time Oscillator'' hypothesis offers a unified mechanism for: (1) regularizing cosmological and black hole singularities via Planck-scale frequency saturation, (2) identifying Dark Energy as the potential energy of the time field, and (3) providing a deterministic, mechanical basis for quantum wave-function collapse and the thermodynamic arrow of time. This work serves as a blueprint for a research program aimed at replacing the geometric paradigm of time with a process-based ontology.
