Multilingualism in Higher Education: Bridging Cultures Through Translation and Interpreting

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This article examines the role of multilingualism in higher education and its connection to translation and interpreting practices. As universities worldwide become increasingly international, students and faculty often interact across multiple languages and cultures. In such contexts, translation and interpreting serve as essential bridges for knowledge transfer, academic collaboration, and cultural integration. The research focuses on the challenges and opportunities of multilingual education, with special attention to the Azerbaijani context and the experiences of students at Nakhchivan State University. Findings indicate that multilingual environments not only enhance students’ communicative competence but also promote intercultural awareness and inclusivity. At the same time, they create demands for professional translation and interpreting support in academic events, publications, and everyday interactions. In addition, the study shows the pedagogical role of translation and interpreting in developing students’ critical thinking and problem-solving skills. By engaging in translation tasks, learners deepen their understanding of linguistic structures and cultural nuances, while interpreters facilitate real-time knowledge exchange. These practices reinforce the idea that translation is not merely a linguistic act but also a cultural and intellectual process that supports the mission of higher education. This research argues that fostering multilingualism through translation and interpreting can bridge cultural divides, create opportunities for international cooperation, and prepare students for global citizenship.
