Gravity as a Refractive Phenomenon of a Fundamental Time Oscillator

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This paper presents a conceptual framework for gravity in which spacetime curvature is replaced by variations in the optical density of a flat, Euclidean vacuum. The fundamental dynamical variable is the local frequency of a scalar time oscillator, ω(x), acting as a dispersive medium. By imposing a condition of "medium incompressibility" (analogous to the unimodular constraint), we derive an effective refractive index n(x) ∝ ω−2. We demonstrate that this specific scaling naturally reproduces the phenomenology of General Relativity in the weak-field limit, including: The correct light deflection angle (1.75''); he Shapiro delay; PPN parameters β=1 and γ=1. Key Novelty: Gravitational Wave Echoes In the strong-field regime, the model diverges from classical geometric predictions. A Planck-scale saturation mechanism prevents singularity formation, resulting in a dense, non-singular "Optical Star" with a reflective boundary. We predict that this structure acts as a resonant cavity for gravitational waves, leading to observable post-merger echoes in the ringdown phase of binary coalescences. This offers a distinguishable observational signature testable by current and future interferometers (LIGO/Virgo/KAGRA). This work is presented as a heuristic blueprint, inviting further analysis of refractive time models as a viable, non-singular alternative to geometric curvature.
