Abstract: This repository contains supplementary information for the Gigascience article by Stephen R. Piccolo and Harlan P. Stevens titled, "Translating short-form Python exercises to other programming languages using diverse prompting strategies." In this paper, we describe an effort to use a large language model to translate Python exercises to the Rust, Julia, Javascript, and C++ programming languages in a semi-automated manner. This repository contains the programming task instructions, Python solution code, Python test code, and data files (where relevant) for the exercises, as well as translated solutions for each language. The `run.sh` bash script orchestrates the process of executing the scripts to parse the data and perform the translations and then generate the manuscript figures. If you wish to perform the translations, you must have an OpenAI key and store it in a local file called `openai_key.txt`. The contents of this file would look something like this: `sk-7x1RbL5YBTSab6h1uFq3T5CinmGYWFnMvLPt0lBXpJlE6tal`. A previous version was uploaded to https://osf.io/4yxrf, but this Zenodo archive is the current version.
