Abstract: The report "Beyond the Bean" analyzes how circular bioeconomy strategies can unlock value from cocoa by-products, focusing on environmental and socio-economic benefits within the cocoa value chain. It presents research on the use and challenges of valorizing cocoa residues (such as pod husks, pulp, and sweatings), supported by case studies and field data from Ecuador and Switzerland. It concludes with evidence-based recommendations for improving waste management, farmer livelihoods, and sustainability through innovative valorization pathways and supportive policy frameworks.
