Enigma of Central Retinal Artery Occlusion: One Presentation Different Etiologies
Year: 2025
Type: article
Study design: Case Report
Abstract: This case series discusses the presentations, etiologies, and management approaches of central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) in four patients. The first case was diagnosed as the left eye CRAO secondary to acute rhino-orbital-cerebral mucormycosis. The second case had CRAO secondary to cavernous sinus thrombosis. The third case had bilateral CRAO secondary to thromboembolic event with bilateral common carotid artery calcified plaques and the fourth one was a case of orbital apex syndrome with CRAO, following trauma in a 6-year-old female. All the cases presented after the golden period, resulting in poor visual prognosis. Though several measures have been devised to reverse the occlusion, the final visual prognosis still depends on the time of presentation and the degree of occlusion, as late presentation is usually associated with irreversible visual loss.
