Phase-Shift Hypothesis: An Energetic Mechanism for Dream Content Transformation

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: : Dream content exhibits characteristic distortions and amplifications of waking-life experiences. Existing models, such as Tononi’s Synaptic Homeostasis Hypothesis, Hobson & McCarley’s Activation-Synthesis model, and Hartmann’s Emotional Amplification theory, provide frameworks for understanding memory consolidation, neural activation, and emotional intensification during sleep. However, these frameworks do not fully account for the systematic transformations observed in dream representations. Here, I propose the Phase-Shift Hypothesis, a neuro-energetic mechanism whereby residual electrochemical potential (primarily K⁺-driven, with contributions from Na⁺ and Ca²⁺) accumulated during waking cognition passively discharges through recently potentiated neural networks during sleep. This discharge produces an overshoot in activation, resulting in perceptually and semantically distorted dream content. The model is simple, but it may help connect neural energy dynamics with the form of dream experiences.
