Innovative Urban Ecological Solutions Using the AS-TTE Permeable Pavement System in the City Centre of Debrecen

Type: article
Abstract: As European cities continue to expand, ecological pressures on urban ecosystems have increased dramatically, particularly in regions experiencing rapid urbanisation and extensive surface sealing. Debrecen, Hungary’s second-largest city, represents a prominent example of a Central European urban environment undergoing continuous transformation. In such cities, impervious surfaces—such as asphalt, concrete, and stone paving—have replaced vast areas of natural soil, leading to diminished ecological resilience, elevated surface temperatures, excessive stormwater runoff, and overall deterioration of environmental quality. Permeable paving technologies have emerged as innovative and sustainable urban interventions capable of mitigating these adverse effects. By facilitating stormwater infiltration, moderating urban microclimates, and restoring soil–vegetation interactions, permeable pavements contribute significantly to urban ecological balance. Among the various systems available, the AS-TTE permeable pavement stands out for its multifunctional load-bearing capacity, high stormwater infiltration efficiency, and compatibility with vegetation growth, making it a promising solution for dense urban settings. This research investigates the climate-smart potential of the AS-TTE permeable pavement system in the city centre of Debrecen. It assesses the environmental, hydrological, structural, and social implications of integrating permeable pavements into highly urbanised public spaces. Employing a combination of geodetic surveys, surface temperature monitoring, chemical water analysis, field experiments, and urban design frameworks, the study aims to demonstrate that permeable pavements can play a central role in ecological restoration, urban comfort enhancement, and the creation of inclusive, multifunctional public areas. Additionally, the research proposes design strategies for eco-friendly playgrounds and accessible community spaces that integrate permeable paving with mobile green walls, smart street furniture, and sustainable mobility infrastructure. The findings are intended to inform academic scholarship, guide urban planning practice, and support municipal policy development, ultimately fostering more resilient, environmentally responsible, and socially inclusive urban environments.
