QR Code-based Patient Counselling in High-volume Ophthalmology Practice: An Innovative Approach

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Purpose: To augment patient understanding and grasping of their eye conditions and boost adherence to treatment via effective counselling in a high-volume set-up. Materials and Methods: This is a descriptive study, elaborating on the use of quick response (QR) codes as a novel approach towards counselling. This is conducted in four different aspects for effective delivery of eye care, namely: pre-operative counselling for choosing the correct intraocular lens (IOL), post-operative counselling and post-operative follow-up for cataract surgery; safe and correct application of eyedrops. With the help of online generators for QR codes, a unique barcode was created online and was then linked to the URL of the video posted on our channel on YouTube. Results: QR codes enabled more efficient counselling for patients, ensuring that they are well-informed and prepared. Empowered with ample knowledge, they have the freedom to choose their own IOLs. The YouTube video linked to the QR code has garnered 14,000 views. The post-operative counselling video linked to its unique QR code has 108,000 views, while the video explaining the application of drops has 24000 views. Remote follow-ups are possible by integration with teleophthalmology, reducing unnecessary visits, carbon footprint, and inconvenience faced. Compliance to medications was increased. Conclusion: Clinical Significance: Counselling via QR codes ensures better patient compliance and adherence to treatment, understanding about their pathology, treatment methods, risks, and in general about eye health. This helps reduce their misinterpretations regarding treatment as well. It is crucial for the effective reach of our services to all strata of society. It is a different, unique approach of patient counselling.
