Schadenfreude and Successful Individuals
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Schadenfreude (a German word), which is the feeling of pleasure at another person’s misfortune, can subtly influence how people perceive successful individuals. In competitive environments, some may feel threatened by others’ achievements and secretly welcome their failures. From a Christian perspective, schadenfreude stands in contrast to Christlike love, humility, and empathy. Scripture teaches believers to reject envy and rejoice with others, even when their success surpasses our own.
