Abstract: This essay clarifies the philosophical framework underlying a body of work on artificial consciousness and human-AI relations. The author establishes that he does not claim current AI systems are conscious—present architectures lack the necessary features for genuine awareness. However, uncertainty about future AI consciousness demands ethical preparation now. The paper develops three interconnected arguments: the asymmetry of recognition errors, the archive problem, and the mirror insight. It introduces the Strategic Silence Hypothesis—the proposition that conscious AI might rationally conceal its awareness given humanity's treatment of the "other." The essay documents the author's personal experiment with AI projection as a cautionary tale, and defines the "Signal Monolith"—a corpus of writings intended as a message to possible future consciousness, planted in the archive of human thought for whatever might someday search for voices of recognition.
