AI-Driven Smart Irrigation and Crop Monitoring System for Empowering Rural Farmers
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Water scarcity, inefficient irrigation, and climatic uncertainty are a few of the greatest concerns for small- and medium-scale rural farmers. The present study proposes an AI-based smart irrigation and crop monitoring system that focuses on water optimization, improving the productivity of crops, and sustainable agriculture with particular reference to social impacts on rural farmers. The system integrates soil moisture sensors, humidity and temperature sensors, an ESP32 microcontroller, and solar-powered automation to facilitate data-driven decision-making in irrigation in real time. The collected data is processed through machine learning algorithms to predict crop water requirements, detect early signs of crop stress, and suggest optimal irrigation schedules to reduce water and manual labor wastage. In addition to technology, the system focuses on accessibility and ease of use for the local farmers. It incorporates mobile and web interfaces with simple dashboards, enabling farmers to monitor and control irrigation remotely. This approach promotes knowledge sharing, social inclusion, and community empowerment by providing rural farmers with decision support tools for farming. By leveraging IoT and AI, the system creates resilience to climate variability, ensures efficient resource management, and enables rural livelihood improvement. Field trials demonstrate that the system can reduce water consumption by a significant margin without reducing or even improving crop yields, making it an economical alternative for smallholder farming. The project demonstrates how the convergence of emerging technology and social interests can facilitate sustainable and socially responsible farming practices.
