Abstract: Self-compassion involves having a balanced awareness of ones' feelings, acknowledging the fragility of the human condition and being kind to oneself. It originates from the Buddhist philosophy and is measured with a self-report Likert-type scale. Since its introduction to the western psychology in 2003, it has been shown to be useful in promoting positive psychological functioning in many scientific areas, from social psychology to psychopathology, and even medicine. However, while most of these studies used the SCS (SCS) to measure self-compassion in correlational designs, there are many criticisms concerning the psychometric properties of the SCS. Self-compassion research is at a stage where the construct and its distinction from other constructs and the validity of its measurement need to be further clarified. The aim of this thesis is to (i) discuss the limits of the current SCS, (ii) explore the possibility of additional items to measure avoidance behavior, (iii) test the reliability and validity of the new expanded SCS, and (iv) use both the current and new SCSs to test the relationship between self-compassion and well-being. Additionally, for validation, the relationship between self-compassion and attachment avoidance was investigated using the two scales. As expected, the new expanded scale passed the reliability and validity tests and explained a greater amount of variance in both well-being and attachment avoidance than the currently used one. Although the revised SCS gained strong support in these series of studies, there were some limitations that are discussed.
