Integrating the 10 Types of Thinking into LEGO Serious Play: A Framework for Innovative Urban Planning in Secondary Cities

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This study proposes an innovative framework based on the 10 Types of Thinking operationalized through LEGO Serious Play (LSP) and comparative observation to enhance participatory urban planning in secondary cities.Addressing four key urban planning gaps-procedural inclusion without epistemological diversity, rational-verbal bias, linear planning failures, and disconnect from lived experiences-the study integrated five theoretical foundations: constructivist and embodied learning, social constructivism and co-production, complex systems thinking, human-centred design, and narrative and futures thinking.Drawing on empirical evidence from Mae Hia Municipality, Thailand, a secondary city demonstrating exceptional openness to planning innovation, this study used surveys, LSP workshops, and comparative observational analysis. It revealed that of the 10 Types of Thinking, Open Innovation, Symbolic Thinking, and Reflective Thinking were the most strategically important, while User-Centred Thinking, Ecological Thinking, and Open Innovation are prioritised for urgent implementation. An importance-urgency matrix analysis exposed fundamental tensions between stakeholder recognition of long-term cognitive needs and immediate implementation pressures, revealing three distinct planning mindsets that required bridging strategies.By integrating individual experiences with systemic insights through tactile and metaphorical model building, this framework offers a theoretically robust, practically viable contribution to interdisciplinary urban studies, with significant implications for urban resilience and sustainable development in secondary cities.
