Abstract: Through the prism of “medieval love letters,” this volume presents a remarkable diversity of scholarly and textual material. The first section consists of three chapters examining different aspects of the love-letter, which the authors understand as both a literary genre and a social practice (they use the terms “art and actuality”). These chapters serve as a kind of lengthy preface to the material that follows. Their focus is on providing an overview of the literary and historical context for these sources.
