Bank Mergers in Post-Liberalization India: Challenges, Opportunities, and Outcomes
Year: 2025
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: The financial sector in India underwent significant transformations during the early 1990s,driven by liberalization, globalization, and economic reforms introduced by the Indiangovernment. These changes initiated a wave of restructuring in the Indian banking sector, characterized by the consolidation of banks. Consolidation, often realized through mergers, refers to the amalgamation of two or more separate entities into a single organization to enhanceoperational efficiency and market reach. This paper delves into the concept of bank consolidation by exploring its historical context, analyzing the motivations behind mergers, and examining the operational and financialoutcomes for merged entities. It also investigates the challenges encountered during the mergerprocess, such as cultural integration, redundancy management, and alignment of businessstrategies, and discusses solutions adopted to address these issues. The study concludes that while mergers can provide banks with opportunities to expand theiroperations, serve a larger customer base, and enhance profitability, liquidity, and efficiency, they are not a panacea for addressing deep-seated financial issues or ensuring sustained growth.Theoretical insights and case studies from the Indian banking sector underscore that mergersmust be strategically planned and effectively implemented to achieve the desired outcomes
