Predicting Outcomes in Response to Therapy (PORT): self-report measures of fear learning and extinction and their association with internet-based cognitive behavioural therapy outcome

Year: 2024
Type: preprint
Abstract: Fear extinction – the process whereby fearful responses to stimuli or situations are reduced – is thought to underlie exposure therapy, a core component of CBT for anxiety disorders. The conditions under which fear extinction can occur and the extent to which individuals differ in the ability to learn to extinguish their fear can be assessed using fear conditioning paradigms. To date, attempts to use fear conditioning responses to predict treatment outcomes using prospective study designs have generated mixed results (Scheveneels et al., 2021). The current study aims to assess whether self-report measures of fear conditioning (expectancy ratings) can be used to predict post-treatment levels of anxiety.
