AI and OER Development: Can AI be a game changing tool in the creation of OER textbooks?

Abstract: AI offers transformative opportunities for Open Educational Resources (OER) and Zero Textbook Cost (ZTC) initiatives. This session highlights Hillsborough Community College's AI OER Creation Program Pilot, which accelerates OER development using tools like ChatGPT Pro and Pressbooks. Faculty have created open textbooks and ZTC courses in just six months with support for content creation, accessibility, and publishing. AI reduces tasks from days to hours while raising challenges like bias and copyright concerns. Attendees will gain actionable insights, including lessons learned, to apply AI effectively in their own OER efforts, shaping the future of affordable and innovative education.
