Abstract: Creativity is considered an essential attribute for addressing future sustainability challenges, but a culturaldivide between art and science has led many students and professionals to overlook their creativepotential. The sustainability environment is increasingly focusing on exploring complex problemsformulations which require testing and the use of imagination. This thesis examines the factors and enablers that facilitate the use of creativity as a tool in the sustainability environment. Through a workshop, ‘the conversation’, individuals from different backgrounds shared their experiences of creativity based on the concept of a ‘sustainability jam session’. A theoretical model, based on Mel Rhodes Four P, Person, Process, Press and Product- framework for creativity, was used to examine data collected within the course ‘Transdisciplinary Approaches to System Innovations’ in KTH and the conversation. The author of this thesis, observed students in the course for three months, aiming to identify which aspects are relevant to creativity in this environment. The results suggest that creativity can be enabled by factors such as embracing individual interests to increase intrinsic motivation, by enhancing creativity skills, by building teams in fluid ways, and by offering a ‘stage’ for showcasing creative outcomes. This thesis mobilises insights from systems innovation, transdisciplinarity, pedagogy and cognitive psychology to provide an integrated understanding of creativity in the sustainability environment, seeking to enhance the creative potential of teams working with complex systemtransformations.
