Abstract: Communication plays a crucial role in successfully managing a crisis. Effective crisis communication is essential not only to inform an organization's stakeholders and protect their physical and/or psychological well-being but also to safeguard the organization's reputation and continuity. While the key content components of a crisis message are largely known, it remains unclear how such messages can be optimally formulated. Yet, the way in which a crisis communication strategy is put into words can have a significant impact on stakeholder's perception. The general goal of this project is therefore to better understand the role of language in crisis communication. First, experimental research will examine how theoretically relevant linguistic cues influence the effectiveness of crisis messages. In addition, a content analysis and in-depth interviews with field experts will explore how language is used in practice.
