Abstract: Society has faced the unique challenge of reducing CO2 emissions associated with its productive activities. Such a goal is particularly relevant to the construction sector, which accounts for 37% of global greenhouse gas emissions. However, the initiatives undertaken in the sector have not yielded satisfactory results. This article proposes and discusses principles that contribute to the formulation and development of low-impact building technologies. The hypothesis is the organization – a central aspect of technology – of architectural production significantly contributes to its unsustainability. Logical argumentation supported by a literature review on technology, sustainability, and low-carbon practices was employed as a methodological approach and the outcome involved identification and characterization of seven principles, namely, permanent building, non-alienated labor, man-nature integration, less energy, self-determination, productive rationality, and popular empowerment. The principles define Low-Carbon Building Technology and suggest a framework for reorganizing production processes so that they become less carbon-intensive.
