Improving Quantitative and Statistical Reasoning Skills Using AI Chatbot Interrogations

Abstract: Role-playing as each other, faculty and students leverage AI chatbots across a set of case studies to help identify correct and incorrect quantitative statistical reasoning for a given hypothesis. Best practices for further interrogation of this reasoning using AI are used to help students identify incorrect or misunderstood assumptions, including utilizing a playbook for effective prompting and decisionmaking. Combined, these skills help faculty promote trust in the responsible use of AI tools for teaching and learning to showcase the gains possible in improving students' critical thinking skills while raising the ceiling on performance.
