Obesity in people living with type 1 diabetes: epidemiology, clinical impact and treatment

Year: 2025
Type: dissertation
Abstract: Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is traditionally considered a disease affecting lean individuals. However, in the last few years this theory has been treated with skepticism because of the rising prevalence of overweight and obesity seen in diabetic patients.Intensive insulin therapy is the foundation of diabetes treatment and seems to possess a vital role in the regulation of body weight. The consequences of T1DM and obesity coexistence, including development of cardiovascular disease, stroke as well as various types of cancer, have not been adequately studied to date.Development of prevention strategies and timely therapeutic interventions are needed to achieve both adequate glycemic control and weight management in these patients.Several trials over the last few years examine possible lifestyle modifications and pharmaceutical agents that will assist in the treatment of overweight T1DM patients. This Thesis reports the changes in the epidemiological profile concerning the coexistence of obesity and T1DM both in Greece and worldwide. In addition, it summarizes the current understanding of the etiology and clinical impact of excessive weight in T1DM patients and reviews the available treatment options based on the existing literature.Although many clinical trials have reached promising outcomes, future studies are warranted to raise awareness and to develop effective, holistic approaches in order to achieve optimal results.
