Serum metabolomic study of morbidly obese patients using nuclear magnetic resonance

Year: 2023
Type: dissertation
Study design: Observational Study
This Master's thesis (TFM) presents a metabolomic study conducted on a group of patients with morbid obesity who underwent bariatric surgery for weight loss. The TFM begins with a comprehensive literature review and bibliometric analysis of all publications related to obesity and the use of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technique until May 2023. Subsequently, serum samples of all the patients involved in the study were analyzed using NMR, and the identified metabolites in the samples were subjected to univariate and multivariate statistical analyses. The comprehensive investigation enabled the identification of discriminant metabolites correlated with certain clinical variables of interest in obesity, such as body mass index (BMI), cholesterol, and blood glucose, as well as the performance of bariatric surgery.
