Year: 2025
Type: dissertation
Abstract: The reduction of working hours has been the subject of debate in contemporary agendas, with particular interest emerging in the four-day work week (4DWW).Alongside the multiple transformations in working time over recent years, very different models of organization have emerged. In Portugal, a four-day work week pilot project was launched in 2023, involving 41 companies, which implemented different formats in its adoption. In this study, a qualitative approach was used to assess the impact of this practice on well-being.A total of 23 interviews were conducted (9 with managers and 14 with employees) through contact with five companies, two of which implemented the National Pilot Project and three of which were associated with it, without, however, being covered by the pilot project procedures. The results showed that managers and employees maintain their interest in the practice of 4DWW essentially for the purpose of achieving better well-being and balance between personal, family and professional life. For companies, it also represents a brand image in the market and, consequently, a competitive factor.Employees are more motivated and satisfied, with work performance and productivity levels that are beneficial to the organization.
