Knowing and Doing Toxicity as Process Investigating Scientific Knowledge Production in Environmental Epigenetic Research on Toxicants
Year: 2024
Type: dissertation
Abstract: Drawing on Science and Technology Studies, this thesis investigates why and how environmental toxicologists adopt environmental epigenetics as a new epistemic perspective and how this reconfigures their research practices. I show how environmental epigenetics provides new possibilities for making perceptible toxicity on the molecular level and how it yields new research objects that enable them to better understand the temporally dynamic and environmentally embedded process of disease development. The thesis offers an important reflection on how scientists relate to and depart from established epistemologies, producing a more complicated understanding of living with a polluted world.
