Type: review
Study design: Systematic Review
Abstract: Malaxis genus is a vital member of the family Orchidaceae, has a wide range of applications in conventional medicines and used in the treatment of infertility, hemostasis, burning sensation, bleeding diathesis, fever, diarrhoea, dysentery, febrifuge, and tuberculosis etc. The member of this genus possesses antioxidant, anti‐mutagenic, anti‐microbial, antipyretic, antidiabetic, antirheumatic, anti‐aging and anthelmintic properties. Malaxis species are utilized in Chyawanprash preparation which is a polyherbal formulation used to cure sexual disabilities, weakness, body pain, cold and cough and also as an immune booster in Ayurveda. In this study, global natural range of distribution of Malaxis species was reviewed and verified from eight standard databases. A total of 191 unique compounds were recorded from Malaxis species through phytochemicals evaluation. Highest active ingredients were recorded from Malaxis acuminata (103) followed by Malaxis muscifera (51) and Malaxis rheedei (32). Further, secondary metabolites, their chemical structures, medicinal and pharmacological properties of Malaxis species were also assessed along with perspectives for future research on these species. The study concluded that Malaxis species have enormous potential, however systematic studies on various aspect like secondary metabolites and their efficacy, pharmacokinetics and clinical trials on human and animal model are essentially required.
