The judiciary and artificial intelligence

Year: 2025
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: This pilot study explores the status and perception of artificial intelligence(AI) within the judicial community of Bosnia and Herzegovina.Due to the lack of documented experience with AI in criminal proceedings, the research aimed to assess both the potential and acceptability ofits application. The central hypothesis posited that members of the judicialcommunity hold negative attitudes toward the use of AI in criminaljustice. To test this, a tailored measurement instrument was developedand distributed among legal professionals. Responses were analysed usingdescriptive statistics, focusing on frequencies and percentages acrossfour thematic categories. The results confirmed the hypothesis: membersof the judicial community have negative attitudes regarding the applicationof artificial intelligence in criminal proceedings. These findingshighlight a significant attitudinal barrier to the integration of AI technologiesin legal practice. The study serves as a foundation for understandinginstitutional readiness and opens space for dialogue between scienceand practice. It is expected to encourage further research and foster informeddebate on the ethical, procedural, and normative implications ofAI in justice systems, ultimately contributing to better preparation for itsresponsible implementation in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
