Connecting theory into practice: Modifying experiential learning for pre-service teachers through the Delphi method
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This study explores the modification of Kolb’s Experiential Learning model for pre-service teacher education programs using the Delphi method to achieve expert consensus on the model’s effectiveness and relevance. While Experiential Learning (EL) is widely recognized for bridging theory and practice, previous implementations often lack specificity and flexibility for contemporary educational demands. The study extends Miller & Maellaro’s (2016) modifications to the model, introducing changes across the stages of Concrete Experience, Reflective Observation, Abstract Conceptualization, and Active Experimentation. Through two rounds of data collection involving expert educators, the study identifies key modifications that align EL more closely with the needs of prospective teachers. These include the integration of learning objectives and educational research in the Concrete Experience and Active Experimentation stages, root cause analysis and team reflection in Reflective Observation, and the introduction of primary and predicate abstraction in Abstract Conceptualization. Findings indicate strong support for the incorporation of research-based strategies and collaborative practices, which are essential for fostering critical thinking and reflective teaching practices. The study highlights the significance of expert consensus in refining educational models and presents a structured approach to adapting experiential learning to teacher education. These modifications aim to enhance the preparedness of pre-service teachers by providing them with relevant, evidence-based, and collaborative learning experiences that bridge the gap between theory and practice. Further research is suggested to test the applicability and effectiveness of these modifications in real-world educational settings.
