Learning beyond the classroom in Bangladesh: The roles of growth mindset and enjoyment in generative AI-mediated Informal Digital Learning of English (GenAI-IDLE)

Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Little is known about the antecedents of informal language learning, in particular in Global South contexts. Even less is known about the role that technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) play in this. This is concerning as especially in contexts where access to quality education may be limited, technology is often expected to be able to fill in the gaps. Preliminary results from studies in other countries show learners’ motivational belief and emotional dynamics have a significant impact on both technology use and informal learning. It is however less clear how these factors interact and no previous research on this has been carried out in Bangladesh. For this reason, we used a questionnaire to collect data from 226 Bangladeshi tertiary English as a foreign language (EFL) learners about their use of technology and generative AI in their independent language learning. We used structural equation modeling to investigate the relationships among growth L2 mindset, foreign language enjoyment (FLE), and generative AI-mediated informal digital learning of English (GenAI-IDLE). The findings showed that participants’ growth L2 mindset had a significant positive impact on their FLE and their GenAI-IDLE engagement. Their FLE played a mediating role in the association between growth L2 mindset and GenAI-IDLE engagement, and simultaneously directly and positively predicted their GenAI-IDLE engagement. These findings have a number of important implications, both for the design of AI technology tools and for teachers aiming to encourage and support learners in their learning beyond the classroom in the Global South.
