Abstract: Unlike metastatic brain tumors that have other primary sites, most patients with glioblastoma die as a result of poor glioblastoma control. We analyzed the end-stage profile of glioblastoma cases treated at our department since 2016, especially the cases of non-neoplastic deaths. The subjects were 109 patients (109 cases). The study included 109 patients (69 males and 40 females) with a mean age of 66.3 years at the time of initial presentation. At the time of the final analysis, 24 patients were alive, 76 died, and 9 were unknown. Regarding deaths, brain tumor deaths were defined as deaths in the patient’s own hospital or outpatient setting due to glioblastoma progression, BSC deaths were deaths during hospitalization in another hospital as a result of BSC, and non-tumor deaths were deaths while the glioblastoma was controlled or under treatment: 10 brain tumor deaths, 48 BSC deaths, 12 non-tumor deaths, and 6 unknown. The 12 non-tumor deaths included 10 males and 2 females with a mean age of 64. 3 years, and the causes of death were 7 infections outside the CNS, 1 other malignancy, 1 fatal cerebral hemorrhage, 1 unintentional accident, and 2 other cases. Of the seven patients with infections, one was undeniably due to hyperglycemia caused by steroid administration, one was undeniably due to immunocompromised patients taking TMZ, and one was due to the mental effects of postoperative light shielding by resafiline irradiation and bed rest due to postoperative spinal fluid leakage. In 2 of the 12 cases, deterioration of mental status was considered to have contributed to death. Since glioblastoma is a poor prognosis disease, the intervention of a palliative support team should be considered early in the treatment period. Analysis of non-tumor mortality cases is important to reduce avoidable deaths.
