Blind Prediction of Cyclic Response of Rc U-shaped Core Walls Subjected to Flexure and Torsion

Year: 2025
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: Reinforced concrete (RC) U-shaped core walls are frequently used to accommodate elevator shafts or staircases and represent important elements of the seismic-resisting structural system of RC buildings. Although they are extensively used, their seismic behaviour has been poorly investigated. To improve the knowledge about their seismic response, an extensive experimental campaign was recently conducted at UC Louvain, Belgium. Several large-scale cyclic tests of RC U-shaped core walls were performed. UC Louvain organized the blind prediction contest for the simulation of the performed tests. The University of Ljubljana (UL) team participated in the blind prediction of the wall subjected to axial forces and bending moments. A post-competition analysis of the wall also subjected to torsion was performed. In both cases, the walls were modelled using the UL version of the MVLEM (multiple vertical line element model) and the in-house version of OpenSees. A reasonably accurate estimation of the seismic response was obtained in both cases using mostly the standard model parameters. The type of failure was accurately predicted. The paper presents both models and comparisons with the experiments. The discussion on how to simulate the buckling and the rupture of the longitudinal reinforcement, as well as the nonlinear torsional response with MVLEM is included.
