Mapping Seismic Vulnerability & Assessing Resilience of Portuguese Communities & Infrastructures
Year: 2025
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: This study undertakes the intricate task of assessing earthquake hazards in Portugal, a region marked by a significant seismic activity history. The research adopts a comprehensive approach, examining earthquake hazards through the lens of four principal facets: Disaster Risk, Exposure, Vulnerability, and Resilience. Central to our analysis is the utilization of entropy weighting, a meticulous algorithm-based methodology applied via a custom Python script. Diverse datasets, including seismic data and socio-economic indicators from the National Institute for Statistics in Portugal, underpin our analytical framework. Leveraging tools such as QGIS for geospatial analysis, our assessment unravels regions vulnerable to seismic perturbations and those fortified with resilience. The overarching objective of this investigation is twofold: firstly, to decode the relationship between geological tendencies and societal vulnerabilities in Portugal, and secondly, to inform policy interventions geared towards disaster preparedness and mitigation at both municipal and national levels. Through this exploration, we endeavour to illuminate regions at heightened risk while also pinpointing communities marked by resilience, thereby contributing to the broader narrative of safety and sustainable development in the face of seismic hazards.
