Evaluation of Seismic Isolation Retrofit Following Early Design Standards

Year: 2025
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: Base-isolated buildings are expected to remain operational under design-level ground shaking. Their performance beyond design considerations is not well understood including limit states such as failure of the bearings, exceedance of the clearance and consequent moat wall pounding, or nonlinear behavior of the superstructure. These limit states have been cause for concern as they can all lead to significant and rapid degradation of structural performance. Moreover, design standards have evolved towards stricter seismic design requirements and increased seismic hazards, as evident by the progressive increase in seismic isolation displacement capacity. To further evaluate early implementations of seismic isolation in new or retrofit applications, this study conducts a seismic performance assessment following ASCE41-17 of a building retrofitted with base isolation in the early 90s. The displacement capacity of the isolation system is evaluated, as well as the capacity of the building, which includes significant vertical irregularities and expected nonductile behavior. Representative simplified building models are developed with a focus on capturing critical response parameters, such as exceeding the displacement capacity of the isolation system and nonlinear superstructure response. Limitations on the use of simplified models and retrofit options are discussed.
