Management of Soft Tissue Sarcomas of Limbs : A Contemporary Perspective
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Soft tissue sarcomas (STS) are a rare type of cancer, representing about 1% of all cancer cases. Diagnosis often relies on finding a soft tissue mass larger than 3-5 cm or located beneath a fascia, leading to further examination. While ultrasound is a useful initial screening tool, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is considered the best method for characterizing the lesion. About one in every five such masses turns out to be an STS. Referring patients to specialized centers promptly is recommended for comprehensive care, including staging and biopsy, with careful attention to biopsy placement in collaboration with the surgical team. Treatment strategies often involve a combination of surgery, radiotherapy (RT), and sometimes chemotherapy. Poor management increases the risk of the cancer coming back locally and reduces overall survival. Notably, care at specialized centers significantly improves patient survival rates. This summary highlights the important clinical considerations and treatment approaches for STS, underscoring the crucial role of specialized center care in improving patient outcomes
