Design Procedures and Guidelines of Novel Self-centering Concentrically Braced Steel Frame Systems
Year: 2025
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: The development of a novel self-centring steel concentrically braced frame (SC-CBF) structural system for seismically active regions is indeed an interesting advancement. When an earthquake occurs, and the structure undergoes lateral deformation, the SC-CBF system has the ability to return to its original position once the seismic forces diminish. This self-centring behaviour reduces residual displacements and prevents permanent damage to the non energy-dissipation components, enhancing its overall resilience. However, there is no existing design guideline in any seismic codes since the development of SC-CBF system is still at the early stage. The article introduces a methodology that aims to enhance the seismic performance of the SC-CBF system by adhering to European seismic code requirements and standards. The goal is for this novel system, developed at the University of Galway, to be adopted by the industry to enhance the performance of steel structures in buildings located in seismically active regions. The provided flowcharts outline the seismic design methodology for the SC-CBF system. The detailed steps of this methodology have been discussed to offer a clear and user-friendly guide for designing self-centring earthquake-resistant structures. This design procedure is implemented once the demand base shear is determined using either the Force-Based Design (FBD) or the Displacement-Based Design (DDBD) methods. Furthermore, the paper includes an in-depth analysis of a specific case study involving a four-storey structure. The case study offers a closer evaluation of the design procedures, illustrating the practical application of the methodologies discussed. The analysis provides a more detailed understanding of the design process and its implications for the SC-CBF system. The outcome of this research will provide clear guidelines for the design of the self-centring steel frame, benefiting both practicing engineers and researchers.
