Status as a Compensatory Layer_ Invariant Substitution Under Measurement Opacity
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: All persistent systems are governed by a scalar invariant that determines stability under perturbation. When that invariant can be directly evaluated at the rate required for coordination, selection proceeds by direct measurement. When it cannot, selection must proceed indirectly. This paper formalizes that necessity. We prove that under conditions of measurement opacity—where candidate generation exceeds evaluation capacity—systems are forced to substitute an indirect selection mechanism to preserve persistence. This substitution does not replace the governing invariant; it replaces access to it. The result is a compensatory layer that routes selection when direct evaluation is infeasible and deactivates when measurement becomes sufficient again. The invariant substitution law is structural and domain-independent. It follows from scale, bandwidth, and selection alone, without appeal to psychology, sociology, or normative assumptions.
