"To Look Life in the Face, Always": Ageism, Inner Time, and the Ethics of Ageing in Mrs Dalloway
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: It is a truth universally acknowledged that Mrs Dalloway, now a hundred years old, still speaks to the questions of time, identity, and the inner life with remarkable urgency. This being the case, the novel invites us to reflect not only on the passing of hours, but on time as it is felt, remembered, and, so to say, lived through the body and mind. In line with this, the article examines Woolf’s portrayal of ageing as a complex and ethically nuanced experience shaped by memory, desire, and reflection rather than by cultural narratives of decline. Drawing on feminist literary gerontology, theories of subjective temporality, and Simone de Beauvoir’s reflections on old age as a situated condition, I suggest that Mrs Dalloway subtly resists culturally dominant assumptions around ageing, particularly in relation to women. Woolf’s stream-of-consciousness style dissolves linear chronology, illuminating inner rhythm and recursive perception. Clarissa’s self-questioning, Sally Seton’s distant presence, and Septimus’s fractured war-haunted memories unfold intersecting age narratives shaped by gender, grief and estrangement. Interestingly, ageing vocabulary (“old,” “age,” “old age”) appears sparingly in the novel, suggesting that Woolf constructs age not through categorical declaration but through atmosphere, syntax, and emotional rhythm. In the same vein, Woolf’s diaries reveal a philosophy of later life characterised by clarity, withdrawal, and resistance. Rather than portraying ageing as a burden or closure, Woolf offers a more ethereal and liberating image. Echoing Dickinson’s image of hope, “age is the thing with feathers”: fragile, spectral, yet capable of unexpected flight.
