Intelligent Building Energy Management in the Context of a Quota-Based Grid Congestion Management Concept
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The decentralization of electricity generation and the electrification of the heating and mobility sectors increase the risk of grid congestion in the distribution grids unless the growing load is matched with the fluctuating generation. New intelligent grid congestion management mechanisms such as the quota model allow to leverage the flexibility potential provided by controllable consumption, generation and storage units in order to prevent or resolve grid congestion events. Instead of a direct control of flexible devices by the grid operator, these devices can be integrated by an intelligent building energy management system (BEMS) which optimizes their operation with respect to constraints at the grid connection point in the case of an imminent congestion. This allows for a more efficient usage of the flexibility, because the BEMS preserves the local balancing of generation and consumption and applies foresight in the operation scheduling. The goal of this work is the development of a BEMS which complies with such dynamic power restrictions at the grid connection point with high reliability despite uncertainties in generation, consumption and restrictions, while still maximizing cost-efficiency. First results from the operation of the BEMS in a large-scale field test prove the general capability to comply with these restrictions, but also point out the obstacles for a sufficient reliability.
