The bladder trigone: A sensory organ?

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The bladder trigone is a distinct anatomical and functional subregion of the urinary bladder, defined by its triangular configuration between the ureteral orifices and the internal urethral orifice. Although traditionally less studied compared to the bladder dome and detrusor body, recent morphological, molecular, and transcriptomic analyses reveal that the trigone is highly specialized. Understanding the trigone’s role in sensory signaling, urinary continence, and pathophysiological conditions such as bladder pain syndrome and vesicoureteral reflux provides a basis for developing therapeutic approaches to treat disorders involving this structure.
