A decade of 1MV accelerator mass spectrometry in Romania – Expanding the range of measurable isotopes

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: At National Institute for Physics and Nuclear Engineering (IFIN-HH), Romania, Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) has a well-established history and extensive expertise. The first AMS experiments were conducted using a home-made system attached to the FN 9 MV Tandem Accelerator. A significant boost in research within our institute was achieved with the installation of the new AMS facility based on a Cockcroft–Walton type 1 MV tandetron, in 2012. It was commissioned for the isotopes 14 C, 10 Be, 26 Al, and 129 I. In parallel with the measurement of these routine isotopes, in the last decade we have expanded the range of measurable isotopes to include boron, tritium and plutonium isotopes, thus significantly expanding the applications. In this paper we shortly present the AMS experiments performed, the new procedures that have been developed for high-sensitivity measurements of boron, tritium and actinides.
