Concept Design: Self-Healing Variable Geometry Radiator for High-Temperature Space Environments using Nd-doped Ionic Liquid Ferrofluid
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This technical note proposes a novel thermal control architecture designed for satellites operating in extreme conditions, such as near-Sun orbits or environments subject to X-class solar flares. The proposed system is designed to operate as a constituent node within a large-scale sensor constellation, capable of distributed space situational awareness and debris trajectory prediction. The core innovation utilizes a non-volatile ionic liquid ([BMIM][Tf2N]) based ferrofluid doped with Neodymium nanoparticles, impregnated within a porous metal foam shell. By applying a magnetic field, the fluid undergoes Rosensweig instability to form "spikes," dynamically increasing the radiative surface area. Crucially, the system features a "Debris Defense Mode" where the fluid instantly retracts into the metal foam upon detecting imminent impact, preventing fluid scattering and minimizing damage.
