Uneven Developmental Progress: A Longitudinal Case Study of Selective Skill Development in a Child with Autism and Sensory Processing Differences in Malaysian PPKI.
Year: 2025
Type: article
Study design: Case Report
Abstract: This case study shares a 3-year journey (2023–2025) of working with "Haris," a 10-year-old student in a Malaysian PPKI classroom. Unlike typical progress reports, this documentation dives deep into the "ups and downs" of his learning, specifically looking at why he seemed to lose skills (apparent regression) and how he eventually bounced back. The findings show that Haris’s progress wasn't a straight line, but a "U-curve" heavily affected by his medication (methylphenidate) and his environment. By switching to interest-based activities, we managed to help him reach a 90% mastery level in his functional skills. This write-up is meant to provide real-world insights for special education teachers in Malaysia on how to handle complex cases of Autism using sensory-informed strategies and a strength-based approach.
