Catholic Church and Violence

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The topic explores the multifaceted relationship between Catholicism and violent actions throughout history. The Crusades, which began in the 11th century, became a vivid example of religious violence justified by the desire to reclaim the Holy Land. Next, the analysis focuses on the inquisitional movements that arose as a reaction to the emergence of opponents of the old church. The formation of the Catholic Church's order and innovations in the 16th century led to intensified repression against heretics, accompanied by torture and executions. The Inquisition reached its peak, demonstrating how religious motives can serve as justification for violence. Exploring these aspects allows for a deeper understanding of the complex relationship between the Catholic Church and violence, as well as their impact on European history.
