Fabrication of low-tortuosity thick electrodes with low material loss by temporally shaped ultraviolet femtosecond laser

Abstract: Fabrication of through holes can reduce the electrode tortuosity of thick electrodes. However, traditional through hole preparation methods are usually complex and incompatible with calendaring. In particular, the excessive loss introduced by through holes reduces the space utilization rate and offsets the increase in energy density. Here, an array of high-density micro-holes is fabricated by temporally shaped ultraviolet femtosecond laser. Using this technique, we achieve a maximum aspect ratio of 47 (6 µm in diameter) and ensure minimal material loss (< 1%) on thick electrodes with thicknesses of 280 µm. The tortuosity of the electrode is significantly reduced by nearly half, thereby boosting the gravimetric energy density of batteries by 9.32–17.26%, or increase the power density by 100 to 400%, and double the lifetime. This work demonstrates a simple approach for fabricating low-tortuosity electrodes that substantially improve power density, energy density and lifetime of batteries.
